Whichever option you choose, avoid the mistake committed by thousands of African students each year: "traveling for the sake of traveling" – you need to put a lot of thought into what brings you to The United States. (read this article, it is very important!)

THE AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM

English is the official language of the United States. It should also be noted that in some states such as Texas, although English is the official language, Spanish is widely spoken.
Sources of funding for foreign students in the United States
Although studies in the United States are extremely expensive, it is important to note that studying in the USA is possible whether you are rich or poor. According to recent statistics, the majority of students currently in the United States pay out of pocket for their studies (Figure 1). These are of course children of wealthy families or individuals that are supported by a third party. Students that pay out of pocket are require to provide universities with some fianancial documents; these are generally bank statements showing that the student has the amount of money required to fund at least the first academic year United States at his/her disposal. A note: this amount varies greatly from state / university in the United States to another.

The cost of education in the United States is largely out of reach of the vast majority of African students. However, as mentioned earlier there is hope; there are tons of USA scholarships out there – if you are from humble background, make your pick and start the fight. Sources of scholarships are numerous: academic institutions, NGOs, your government, the U.S. government, international organizations and various other providers of scholarships. Good to know: The cost of education varies enormously across the United States. It is important to note that cost in some cities/states can double or even triple that in other cities/states. As mentioned above it is important to know that many universities offer grants that are designed to help reduce the cost.

There are steps you can several steps one can take to reduce the final cost.

FINANCIAL AID FOR EDUCATION IN THE UNITED STATES

Where to find money for school?  1. The internet - International organizations, local and foreign governments and philanthropists provide scholarships for studies in the United States. New listings show up almost every day. Where to find them? Simple, the internet is full them. One of the missions of H.A.S. is to find as much as possible and bring them to the attention of students. Scholarships that African students are eligible for are posted regularly to our website. These include             Scholarships for Master (MS, MA, MBA ...)             Scholarships for biology             Scholarships for study in Earth Science             Scholarships for studies             Scholarships for studies in Arts / People / Law             Scholarships for Communication             Scholarships for computer / mathematical             Scholarships for studies in Business / Finance             Scholarships for studies in sports             Scholarships for studies in Physics and Engineering             Scholarships for studies in Education             Etc ... Note however that for the poorest students, scholarships mark 'fully Funded' are preferable. 2. The opportunities offered by the Universities – also available on the internet; we have dig-up a couple for you as well – use our search engine. Funding offerted by universities include:

  • 'Research assistanship' (fellowships)
  • Scholarships in the form of tuition waiver
  • 'Teaching assistanships
  • Finacial aid in the form of part-time job  important note about 'Research assistanship': An impressive number of these scholarships will never make it to the internet unfortunately. Every day across the United States, research positions become available in various laboratories for postdocs, but also for those who wish to pursue studies leading to a master's or doctorate.

How do you go about finding these?

Well it is difficult and truly you have not other choice than

  1. Prepare a resume then a cover letter
  2. Selecting a bunch of faculty across the United States and Canada, preferable those that have funding and begin sending emails. You might get lucky.

Good to know:For students dreaming of getting their doctorate or master degree in the USA, a yes from one of those faculty translates for “FREE” studies in the USA for your tuition fee and monthly stipend are all paid for. Furthermore the faculty will support you for when you apply for an admission to the University and then for a visa.

In the United States, the academic year usually lasts nine months. It begins at the end of August (or early September) and ends in mid-May. This period is divided into two semesters called fall and spring semester. These two periods also contain with small vacation time and holidays.

In addition to spring and fall semesters, there also is a summer semester (less crowded/popular) – many students do not attend class during summer for this also correspond to holiday.

However, some students choose not to go for holidays and instead attend classes. As you gathered, attending classes during summer is optional but is recommended for students who want to accelerate their studies. It is advisable for students to begin their studies during the fall semester: beginning August / September) – here are a couple of several reasons:

  1.           A large number of courses are taught during this period (note that some required course aren’t offer every year); students who began during this semester are more likely to complete their degree on time.
  2.           Starting during the fall semester make is a great idea finacially- cost is less.
  3.            Another important point: universities often offers all sorts of financial assistance shemes to help lower the cost to those paying out of pocket – these financial aids options often become available during fall.

Clarification about important terms: first few that get mixed-up: Colleges, Institute and Universities (“Private” and “Public” Universities)

Colleges, Universities, and Institutes are all degree-granting institutions.

Colleges are smaller than universities and compare to University stand out by the fact that they do not offer doctoral degrees. A lot of emphases is put on teaching as compare to research.

Institutes are institution which usually specializes in degree programs in a group of closely related subjects; few examples e.g. institutes of technology, institutes of fashion, institutes of art and design ….research center at a certain extent can be fit in the category, some offer graduate degrees as well as research and training opportunities, and may or may not be affiliated with universities.

University are compare to these 2 first category, Universities are generally bigger and offer a wide range of Doctorate degree. There are two main type of Universities in the US: public and private. Both type offer degree programs; the main difference among them is in the way the are supported financially.

Public universities are also referred to as state universities

  • Their support come from the state in which they are located,
  • State universities tend to be very large with enrollments of 20,000 or more students.
  • The tuition they charge us generally lower compare to private universities.
  • International students are usually charged a higher tuition compare to state residents (student who live and pay taxes in the state)

Private institutions

  • They are supported by a different sources, they rely on
    • By student tuition
    • Investment income
    • Research contracts
    • Private donations
  • The enrollment here is generally less than for public Universities (less than 20,000 students).
  • Tuition fees tend to be higher at private universities than at state universities.
  • All students (international American in and out of state) are charged the same tuition.

The master’s degree is the first graduate-level qualification, or second cycle degree, in the U.S. higher education system. Master’s degrees may be considered terminal professional degrees in some fields such as the fine arts, or they may be considered as second degrees that may or may not lead to PhD studies. In some subjects, such as the behavioral and natural sciences, it is increasingly common practice to proceed directly from the bachelor’s degree to enrollment in PhD studies without being required to earn a master’s degree. In these subjects, the master’s degree is often considered unimportant for professional purposes except as an intermediate qualification that students may petition for in cases where they need such a degree for employment purposes.

Master’s degrees generally take two years to complete, but the time period may be shorter or longer depending on how the degree program is structured (12-month versus 9-month academic years, for example), whether the student is enrolled full-time or part-time, the degree requirements and the prior preparation of the student. Master’s degrees are more common in some subjects than others. In some fields, the master’s degree is a required or expected qualification; while in others it is either not required or has no utility in the job market. As a result, U.S. research doctorate programs do not always require a master’s degree for admission. The fields where master’s degrees are most commonly awarded include business, education, health and medical fields, engineering, public administration and social services.

The most common academic master’s degrees are the Master of Arts (MA or AM) and Master of Science (MS or SM). However, there are many different master’s degree titles, especially in the professional fields.

RESEARCH MASTER’S DEGREES

Master’s degrees awarded in academic fields are generally research degrees that require the completion of required graduate-level courses and seminars, passing comprehensive examinations in the major subfield of research and usually one or more minor subfields, and the preparation and defense of a master’s thesis under faculty supervision. Occasionally, such degrees may be awarded without thesis by substituting a major project or set of papers for the thesis.

 PROFESSIONAL MASTER’S DEGREES

Master’s degrees awarded in professional fields may be structured as research degrees (as in engineering, for example), or they may be structured specifically to prepare students to work in an applied professional field at an advanced level (as with the MBA). In the latter case, there is usually a specified set of course or seminar requirements, specific graded exercises, and a project or other requirement is substituted for the thesis. Professional internships may also be required in supervised work settings.

The Master of Liberal Studies or Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree (*) is frequently awarded to graduates of programs in divisions of continuing or adult education. Despite the title, the content of this degree often corresponds to regular M.A., M.S. or professional master’s degree programs.

Important Note:In the US, an increasing number of PhD program open their door to student whose highest degree is a bachelor. But please note that in this case, completing the program might take longer compare for instance to those students that have been admitted with a master degree. Damaris

Master as doctorate program involves a combination of research and coursework. Graduate education differs from undergraduate education in that it offers a greater depth of training, with increased specialization and intensity of instruction. Study and learning are more self-directed at the graduate level than at the undergraduate level.

The doctoral degree is designed to train research scholars and, in many cases, future college and university faculty members. Receipt of a doctoral degree certifies that the student has demonstrated capacity as a trained research scholar in a specific discipline.

At the doctoral level, the Ph.D. (doctor of philosophy) is the most common degree awarded in academic disciplines. Other doctoral degrees are awarded primarily in professional fields, such as education (Ed.D. or doctor of education) and business administration (D.B.A. or doctor of business administration). Doctoral programs involve advanced coursework, seminars, and the writing of a dissertation that describes the student's own original research, completed under the supervision of a faculty.
